Anyone who has followed the Indian music industry in the past decade can easily identify the powerful voice of Sunidhi Chauhan. Born on August 14, 1983, in Delhi, the versatile singer has been singing since she was just 4 years old. Her career debut was in 1996 at the age of 12 for the movie Shastra.

It didn’t take long for young Sunidhi to make her mark. She quickly rose to prominence after winning the first reality singing show Meri Awaz Suno. By 1999, she had sung one of the biggest hits of the year, “Ruki Si Zindagi” for the movie Mast. The song earned her the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent.

The following year, she sang “Mehboob Mere” for the film Fiza, which earned her another Filmfare nomination. Due to her sensational and powerful voice, she was often called the “queen of item songs” by the media.

She sang “Dhoom Machale” for the movie Dhoom, “Kaisi Paheli” for Parineeta and “Deedar De” for Dus, getting three Filmfare nominations in just two years. However, her first Filmfare was for the song “Beedi Jalaile” from Omkara. Her popular songs include “Dance by Chance” for Rab ne Bana Di Jodi and “Sheila Ki Jawani.” She has won three Filmfare awards during her thriving career.

An important award- the Dadasaheb Phalke award was bestowed to her for singing the song “Kamli” from the movie Dhoom 3.

Sunidhi was ranked in the Celebrity 100 list for India four times between 2012 and 2015. Her singing style contains elements of pop and R&B, though her personal favorites are soft and soothing numbers. She has a high octave vocal range. Her voice is very powerful and has fit into the “dance number/item song” stereotype in Bollywood. She has done some softer songs for the movie Chameli which touches her incredibly low and humming notes as well.

She has experimented with other styles of music while growing as an artist. She recorded the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships Anthem which included a mix of Hindi, English and Assamese lyrics. The song also features a rap by her.

The now 35-year-old singer has been married twice, first to choreographer and director Bobby Khan who she married in 2002 at the age of 18. The couple divorced only a year later. She then married her friend from Meri Awaz Suno days, music composer Hitesh Sonik in 2012 and has a son with him.
