INFORMATION

It won’t be wrong to call Shankar Mahadevan one of the most successful music composers and singers of the current generation. As a composer, he has excellent skills that have helped him to create dozens of chartbusters. On the other hand, his singing career has always struck a positive note, and it is getting better with each song.

He was born on 3 March 1967 in Chembur, Maharashtra, India to Seetha Narayan. As a child, he had a keen interest in playing Veena and learning Hindustani Classical and Carnatic music from Pandit Shrinivas Khale.  He started his studies in Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School (OLPS) and SIES college of Arts, Commerce, and Science.

Although he was deeply enthusiastic towards music, yet, he did not step back from getting a degree in Engineering in Computer Science from Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology, Navi Mumbai.  He also started working for a software company named Leading Edge, but his love for music took him back to his first love.

Mahadevan became popular due to his first album “Breathless” in 1998 which had him sing an entire song in one go without breathing. The unique music and song delivery made him an instant hit with the youth and he started a celebrated musical career. Audiences are able to relate with his years of hard work and strong vocals that make his tracks worth playing on a loop.

However, he still believes that the Indian film industry has not fully exploited classical music. He, with his group named Shankar-Ehsan-Loy, is keen on arranging music that is different and timeless. The trio has performed on various stages and has come up with marvelous songs like “Mitwa,” “Khwabon Ke Parindey,” “Kal Ho Na Ho,” “Tere Naina” etc.

His musical brilliance is awarded with 6 National Film Awards and 6 Filmfare Awards along with 2 Star Screen Awards. He has also acted in movies and TV on two occasions- first in a Marathi movie named “Katyar Kaljat Ghusali (2015) and then a Doordarshan serial “Ek Se Badhkar Ek” (1995). At present, he has composed music for 67 movies.

He is married to Sangeeta Mahadevan and has two children named Siddharth and Shivam Mahadevan.   Siddharth has already made his Bollywood debut with the hit song “Zinda” for the movie “Bhag Milkha Bhag.” He is also the founder of “Shankar Mahadevan Academy” for educating and promoting music to a worldwide base of students. Very few people know that he directed the famous campaign “School Chale Hum” for child education initiated by the Indian government.
